We are looking forward to another exciting year. Can’t wait to get started. Please bring in any records of what your son has done over the summer to the first meeting. Clean Up Cruise Delayed August 4, 2009

Sorry Scouters, Capt. Jim Has some problems with the boat this Saturday (it’s all booked up) and there have been reports of some troublesome reptiles on the island (you don’t want to know).
In light of these circumstances we will delay our Scout service cruise until a few of us leaders recon the area after our meeting on the 15th (any volunteers?). If all is OK we will probably return to the island with the Pack in September (after reptile breeding season).
Until then get ready for Round Up and our first Den Meetings coming soon!

The Webelos go camping! July 9, 2009

Matthew, Benjamin, Will, and Noah get ready for an obstacle course
Our first and second year Webelos just got back from Resident Camp in Boxwell Scout Reservation. They had a wonderful time!
It all started off on Monday morning when we arrived at Gaylord Cub World. We eagerly checked in and found our camp site. Our new home away from home was Camp Site #9. It was a secluded area that was a surrounded by woods and the sounds of the great out doors. After unpacking and securing our gear in our tents we went for our swim tests.
At 2:00pm we gathered for a tour of the Camp Stahlman. That’s where the Boy Scouts camp. We saw their dining hall, talked with the life guards at the water front, and visited the Conservation Yard. We’re looking forward to going there when our Webs cross-over into a troop.

Benjamin & Jacob learn how to read a map
On Tuesday, the Webelos I’s began working on their rank work. Over the course of the next two days, they worked hard to earned their Citizenship, Readyman, Handyman, and Outdoorsman Merit Badges. They are now well on their way to earning rank. Way to go guys!
The Webelos II’s learned Scout Skills, the skills they’ll need not only through their Boy Scout years, but skills that will help them during the course of their lives. They were in Patrol One and learned Fire Safety, Map & Compass Skills, Knots & Lashings, and First Aid.
Of course we had some free time during the trip to do some site seeing and a little fishing. Marshall caught his first fish. The scouts also had a grand time playing on the castle, pirate ship, and fort.

Marshall catches his first fish!
We took several trips to the Cub World and Stahlman trading posts where all sorts of goodies were for sale. Pocket knives, ice cream, and even jester hats caught our attention.
The Scouts also visited the obstacle course that Mr. Dan and Mr. Joe helped to renovate during a Service Project as part of their Wood Badge training this spring.
One of the highlights to our trip was the last night’s campfire. There were lots of skits put on by the Boy Scouts that staff the Resident Camp. You’ll have to ask some of the boys about the skits – “The Suitor of the Princess” and the “If I weren’t a Webelo” song. Some of the other Packs put together their own skits to entertain us as well.

The American Flag is proudly displayed at Camp Craig
But the best part of the camp fire is the grand finale where our country’s brave veterans are honored for their service and a tattered American flag is respectfully retired.
After we broke camp on Thursday morning, we decided to take an impromptu self-guided tour of Camp Craig, another active Boy Scout camp on the reservation.
From the looks of the boys on our way home, they had a great time and a looking forward to another time when they can visit Boxwell. In the meantime, I think we’ll get some well deserved rest!

Know your knots May 8, 2009
Posted by Joe in Webelos II.add a comment
Scouting and knots seem to go hand-in-hand. As a Scout advances through the ranks of Scouting, he’ll learn a variety of knots. He’ll not only learn how to tie them, but when they are most appropriate to use.
For example, the Square knot and the Sheet Bend knot are very similar knots. However the Square knot works well only when the two ropes are of equal widths (or diameters) whereas the Sheet Bend can be used with ropes of different widths. Additionally the Sheet Bend knot tends to be much more secure and stronger than the Square knot.
Last night the Webelos Stealth Den worked on tying knots. We practiced tying the Overhand knot, the Square knot, the Bowline knot, the Timber hitch, and the Two Half Hitches. We also learned how to whip the end of a rope to keep it from fraying.
If you’re looking for good information on knots, there is plenty available on the Internet. Here are few links to help you get started.
- Animated Knots By Grog
- Boy Scout Knots
- The Eight Basic Boy Scout Knots
- How to Tie Popular Knots
- Merit Badge Knots
Tying knots is fun and easy. But, they can also be very important! Remember the story that I told last night: I almost spent the night on the river in 20 degree weather because the granny knot that I used to tie the boat to the duck blind had slipped untied and the boat floated away. Fortunately another boat came by and took me to my boat. If someone hadn’t come by, I would have spent a very cold night in a duck blind on a river in the middle of January. That’s a lesson I won’t soon forget! After that, I learned to tie a bunch of good knots! And they’ve come in very handy.
So, use the piece of rope that I sent home with you to practice. We’ll work on these and more knots again soon since they are so important and useful.

The Webelos Stealth den build an archway May 3, 2009

The Stealth Den hard at work on the archway
The Webelos Stealth Den has been hard at work over the past few weeks. We’ve used our weekly den meetings to create a new archway for the Pack to use when we go camping.
We started with a three cedar posts and a slab of oak. Working under the supervision of our Den Leader Dan Cook and Assistant Den Leader Jimmy Pippen, we stripped all the bark off of the posts, we sanded them smooth, and carved them so they would fit together nicely. When we were finished, we put some protective sealant on it so it will last for years to come.

The Stealths present the archway to the Pack
On April 23rd, 2009, we presented the new archway to the Pack during our monthly Pack meeting. We are very pleased with the way it has turned out.
We took it to the Spring 2009 Cub-o-Ree at Montgomery Bell State Park, May 1st – 3rd. It helped us to win First Prize in the Best Camp Site Contest.

The archway helped to win a First Prize in the Best Looking Campsite competition
All the Webelos have carved their initials into the posts and it’s our hope that future Webelos II will do the same. We’re happy to leave this legacy with Pack 126.

In the Cub Scout Promise, a boy promises to do his best to do his duty to God and his country, to help other people, and to obey the Law of the Pack.
There are many ways we can live out the Promise on a daily basis. And one of them is to honor those men and women of the armed services who have given freely of themselves in defense of our great country.
For the past six years, the Cub Scouts in middle Tennessee have honored our nation’s veterans by placing United States flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day. It’s a way to remember those who have fought and perhaps even died for our freedom. It also serves to let the current armed services personnel and their families know that we truly appreciate their great service to our country.
Last year, Pack 126 helped to adorn the graves of over 9,000 veterans at the Veterans Cementery in Pegram, Tennessee. And we’re planning to go back and do it again this year. So make your plans now to join us.
Freedom is not free. So, let’s make sure to let those brave men and women and their family know that we appreciate them.
It’ll be a good time that you will remember for years to come and it will mean a lot to those who have a loved one serving in the military.
When is it? Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 at 7:30am.
Where is it? Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery
7931 McCrory Ln, Nashville, TN 37221
(615) 532-2238
What do I wear? To honor the veterans, we’ll wear our field uniforms, also known as our Class A uniforms.
What if I have questions? Contact your den leader; they will have the information you need about this event.
Do I need to register ahead of time? No, just show up at 7:30am on the morning of the flag placement ceremony. To help us know who to expect, please let you den leader know that you plan to attend.
Is there any costs? No, this is free and the flags will be provided.
