Clean Up Cruise Delayed August 4, 2009

Sorry Scouters, Capt. Jim Has some problems with the boat this Saturday (it’s all booked up) and there have been reports of some troublesome reptiles on the island (you don’t want to know).
In light of these circumstances we will delay our Scout service cruise until a few of us leaders recon the area after our meeting on the 15th (any volunteers?). If all is OK we will probably return to the island with the Pack in September (after reptile breeding season).
Until then get ready for Round Up and our first Den Meetings coming soon!
Several volunteers went out and scouted the island. It is very overgrown (bring bug spray), but holds LOTS of promise! We didn’t see any snakes while we were there, but we did see a few turtles as we viewed the banks. There is an intriguing inlet where we found lots of little critter prints, such as raccoons. There’s lots of work to be done clearing the underbrush and such, and several ideas were put forth about how to handle that task. There are a couple of places that look good for campsites, and a couple of small beach areas. Some of the Webelos accompanied us, and had a great time playing in the water as we explored.
Dan Cook was able to have some signs printed up, and he posted these around the island as we trekked along. The signs declare the island a “Pack 126 Service Project Area”.
Incidentally, the trip on the Blue Heron Cruise boat was wonderful and the weather was perfect!
I’m sure a report will be presented to the Pack Committee in the near future, and our intrepid island explorers will be hatching plans for clearing and cleaning up and utilizing this great opportunity!
(look for photos on the Pack Website soon!)
